The VTEC (Vented Thermoplastic Energy-Absorbing Cushion) custom-fit system used an expanding
urethane foam matrix poured into a shell composed of fiberglass with a leather covering that came in contact
with the aviator’s head—was utilized in the SPH-3C.
While the standard, earlier variant of the SPH-3 utilized a traditional web sling suspension harness
setup, the custom-molded VTEC liner was used in the SPH-3B and SPH-3C variants as a specialized fit upgrade
for US Navy crewmembers during the 1980s.
